She

She…
In ill-fitting clothes
Stands along the intersection
All kinds of misery
Colors her forlorn face.
She..
In the rain shivers
Clutching cardboard
A plea in a sea of strangers
Jagged words scrawled
Across discarded box top
OUT OF WORK
HOMELESS
PLEASE HELP
GOD BLESS.
And the rush hour traffic moves on.

Artist's Description

I am haunted by a sight I’ve seen several times recently. A homeless woman, 30 something, worn face, thin frame, pleading silently for help at an intersection near a major highway exit. I wonder who she is. Where she came from. How did she find herself in her current, desperate situation? She carries the weight of the world in her lost eyes. Is an addiction enslaving her to a life on the street? My heart goes out to her. My hope is she finds her way “home”.
