Artist's Description

Castorocauda is an extinct mammaliaform, whose name translates as “beaver tail.” This animal’s discovery and its obvious aquatic adaptations came as a surprise at a time when it was generally believed that mammaliaforms were generalized ground dwelling insectivores. Castorocauda was found in Liaoning Provence of China and would have lived during the Middle to Late Jurassic.
