Girls and Boys

The room is bare. There are four worn chairs and broken pieces of plastic blocks that line the corners of the narrow space. There is no window and one light bulb blinks periodically. Two girls are pushed inside the room and told to wait. They stand in the dim light unsure of what to do. They grab the chairs and seat themselves in the center of the room. Their chairs face each other and they look for answers. They talk.

In the next room, unknown to the young females, two boys are put into a similar cell with dusty trash and not much more. There are no chairs in this room. They separate as a pair and take hold of a corner. They sit in corners that share an adjacent wall. Facing the same bare wall, they do not face each other. They talk.

After some time, in each room, someone rolls in a television set. Both young couples are wary. The stranger plays the tape and leaves the room. It is not known if the two rooms are acting audiences to the same show, but the boys snicker at the moaning and pounding. The young girls cover their faces and peek through their fingers. They giggle at the woman and her large breasts. They pretend to cover their eyes when the naked man appears but they catch a glimpse of what he bears. The tapes continue to play.

The tapes stop playing. The young couples are exhausted from watching. The pairs have stopped talking. It is silent in both rooms.

The doors open. They are told to follow. The boys and girls walk out of their assigned rooms and see one another. Immediately their eyes look to the floor. Images flood their minds. They become nervous without talking. They become self-conscious without looking. They follow without questioning, their minds too lost in what cannot be understood.
