Artist's Description

Sunset in Douz, the Gateway to the Sahara, in central Tunisia.

In the past, this oasis town was an important stop from trans-Sahara travellers and traders, but nowadays it earns its living from tourists and adventurers.

I’ve been to many beaches, but the desert sand is like no other that I’ve encountered, with a very fine texture like talcum powder – and I found to my cost that it doesn’t agree with compact cameras :(

I was expecting a bright red sunset, and a sun that was too bright for comfort, requiring a tight aperture and short exposure …. however there was so much dust in the air it was like a fog where everything was grey and shadowless, and as for the exposure:

Nikon D200 (not wrecked by the sand!)

18-200 – 70mm
1/125
F5.6
ISO 100
