The Time of Tadpoles

In mud puddles and grass blocked drains,
tadpoles would emerge,
a spell after rain.

These we’d gather in bottles
and keep until legs formed
and then we’d put them back
in bigger pools to await
the time of frogs.

They were tricky and swift,
the tadpoles.
