periwinkles and other small shells

Between the toes,
periwinkles and other small shells.

Here is mostly grit.

And yet we look to find a sparkle,
a pattern, a shape:
a memento of our
just standing and staring,
East,
out to sea.

The baby is covered up
against the afternoon as we
prepare to walk back,
across the hills of sand,
to the car park.

Each ocean is different.

Each coast line has its own
way to address the vastness.
Each beach describes
its own outlook
on being landed.
