Crumbs in Sheets

I loved my garters when I was in the Boy Cubs. And my long socks, and my serge wool shorts with pockets. I saluted the Queen, whom I’d seen, on a stage, from a furlong away and sang her praises in a loud but untutored voice. And then, I’d go home, in the dark, excited, change, get into bed, and eat sweet biscuits that left their crumbs in the folds of the bleached calico sheets.
