I took this photo at Greenmount Beach (the Southern end of Coolangatta beach) in 1961, when is was holidaying there with my parents (in the fore-front of the photo).

On the hill in the background is the famous Greenmount Beach Guest House which had been built in 1904.

Erecting of Greenmount Beach House transformed Coolangatta into a thriving holiday destination. During the 40’s 50’s and 60’s Greenmount became the center of beach entertainment with the famous Hokey Pokey and inter-hotel beach competitions. These activities captured the imagination of holiday makers throughout Australia, with many guests returning annually.

In 1978 the Guest House was demolished and replaced by the new Greenmount Beach Resort.

The clothing worn by the boy on the right is typical of the era.
