Artist's Description

Built: 1927 Restored to: 1929

John Demchuk had been trained as a blacksmith in Galicia before he immigrated to Canada at the turn of the century. Even while he farmed in the Lake Eliza district, people came to him to shoe horses, sharpen tools and repair farm implements and machinery. The demand for his skills was so great that he moved to the town of Myrnam and began smithing full-time. The shop was considered advanced for its time, for Mr. Demchuk had partially mechanized it by adapting a Model T car engine as a power source for his tools.
