The mansion of Monte Cristo sits on a hill over-looking the town of Junee in South-West New South Wales, a town of some 5000 people once known as the ‘Rail Centre of the South’. Constructed in 1884, Monte Cristo was originally the home of Christopher Crawley, a shrewd businessman who predicted the railway’s arrival in Junee and the subsequent boom in land prices.

Monte Cristo is not a large mansion but it is full of superb antiques collected by the current owners during their 30 year restoration of the property, which had been neglected for a number of years and had nearly been destroyed by weather and vandals. Outbuildings in the grounds contain other exhibits, including a large display of buggies and carriages.

One of the more fascinating features of the mansion is that it has a reputation for supernatural goings-on, with several reported sightings of ghostly figures, supposedly former residents and servants of the mansion.
