The Little One

Where do the little ones go after they turn blue
Hold them keep on holding them and willing them to stay
How to find the courage to face what must be gone through
The emptiness of life when the little ones go away

How do you sleep again when you should have been craving rest
How do you swallow food down and have no need to strain
When the days will not be busy and there is no lingering mess
And the silence will deafen you, will scream inside your brain

Then all too soon the world insists you can no longer wait
How do you face the faces and their attempts to comfort you
You paint a smile and stare right through and keep your back so straight
But how do you go on when the little one’s left you
