Night was falling although the storm had kept it all dark for ages.
Bedraggled she kept on trudging through the bush! Even walking in circles was keeping her warm! And then she looked up as the setting sun broke through the clouds bathing the world in final golden glow! He had dragged her out here in search of gold and now she had found it! The true glorious gold! Special yet everyone could see it!
She sat and gave up just watching the sun as it said farewell.

But what was that?
A faint Cooee?
All this time she had crashed through the bush muttering pathetic woe is me crap, and she was unable to hear the calls for her, or were they calls for help?
She returned the call in her biggest voice
“Coo Coo Cooooooooeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!”
“Over here boys!”
“Christ how’d she get this far?”
“She’s close to the bluff!”
“God please don’t let her have gone over!”
Hearing their voices so close gave her strength. She really didn’t want to be alone and forgotten.
But would he be with them? Would he care? He’d be angry she’d lost him valuable fossicking time.
She had to hide so he wouldn’t clout her again for wasting his time. She went to run … too late! A hand clamped on her neck.
“Got her! She’s here!” the voice belonging to the hand called over the hand’s shoulder “She’s alright! She’s safe!”
“Just let me get my hands on her! Wasting my time! I’ll ring her bloody scrawny neck!”
He was there and he was angry … and she felt elated he cared enough to come find her after all!

She waited trembling and finally the man arrived and she jumped into his arms although she knew she shouldn’t
“You silly bloody bitch! If you weren’t the best pup from the best dog a man could have I would bloody turf you off that blasted bluff!”
“Maybe next time you tie her to your stake mate!” one of the blokes laughed as they led the way back to the diggings
“Yeah before the ching catches her and cooks her up for tea one night!” another called
She was just so pleased that he wasn’t clouting her, and instead was carrying her in his big warm hands back through the scary bush to their camp.
“Just stay with me girl and you’ll have a good life and don’t scare me like that again!” the man crooned softly his face burried in her ruff … drying tears from his eyes. “Dad’d kill me if I lost you!”
