Gerri reached up then hauled herself from between the two boulders onto the ledge split into the bigger of the two. Sweat poured from her shoulders and brow as she pulled up slowly, finally feeling confident to pause on her toe in the crack and the opposite fingers clinging to the rock wall.

She felt the whoosh more than heard it as a smear of soft wet mass shot past her back and landed on the rock behind her. It unbalanced her. She felt the strain on her digits until relenting she jumped back to the hard packed dirt between the boulders.
Feeling the jarring in her landing knee she winced at the inconvenience of possibly being injured in the middle of the bush.

She spun about and looked for the culprit.
The gargled sneeze came from within the fluorescent blue/green squelching mass now on the boulder behind her. There was nothing else but the mass on the rock. But on closer inspection there seemed to be a face inside it looking up at her. Two disks shining like brilliant magenta jewels, slit nostrils in a raised smudge that she took for a nose then another slit larger and flanked by orange flaps that she considered to be a mouth. It moved like the undulation of a mollusk and the sound came again, harsh yet attractive with musical connotations and lilts.

Soft orange lids closed and opened again over the magenta jewel eyes.
Transfixed she could see her own face reflected in the shining duel surfaces.
Slowly the face moved forward and the jelly substance formed about it becoming a small squared body. The outer surface hardening crisp apricot yellow, darkening to red on top and brown at the bottom of its four long green limbs. On the whole it was no more than half a meter in length.

The mouth pouted, the tone sounded slower sadder and Gerri felt an overwhelming sense of melancholy as the magenta eyes looked skyward.

The eyes returned to her and she felt a tingle cover her from the top of her head to the tip of her toes and back. Then she watched as slowly one green limb reached to touch her leg above her throbbing knee. She watched as the limb began to throb red beneath the green crust. Suddenly she felt her pain vanish.

The creature then seemed to squat, it’s limbs pooling beneath it as red liquid slithered from the magenta discs.
Without thinking she reached with a curled finger and touched one of the red drops.

It rose floating, hovering, seemingly smiling, then began spinning; the limbs flying out like propellers.

And just as suddenly as it had come the creature shot away.

She stood for a while looking at where it had been then down at the blood on her finger.
‘Last time I let Jake make my morning coffee!’ She mumbled and turned back to the rock…

… Unbeknowns to the dozen magenta discs forming in pairs on her shoulders.
