Staying Near Stanly [6 of 6]

The sun was shining the daisies in the meadow drew at the hems as the two little girls ran along in their pinafores and boots.
‘Emily! Mary!’ Rosie sang out ‘Come help with the supper before your fathers return!’
The girls stopped turned smiling and waved then came running home.
Inside the boy cried for attention in his crib and Rosie attended to him, tucking him under her arm like a bundle as she made sure the stew pot was right before sitting in her chair by the fire to feed.
The girls set to in laying the table and pouring the water from the jug into the tin mugs. Emily had brought in a fist full of daisy’s and she deftly made a chain garland to encircle the water jug in the middle of the table.

The cabin was different now. The men had built a room off the back and their bed was in there now. There was a loft where the girls slept and there were more things. Cupboards and shelves, the highest displaying Rose’s trinkets long saved from her childhood home.
Emily came and stroked her baby brother’s cheek. She smiled at her mother her blue eyes dazzling in their purity. Mary looked over from the table where her mischievous fingers were stroking the daisies. Her green eyes flashed as she gave a crooked smile. A large hand laid on her head and she squealed in fright turning to her father who had come in the door behind her in his stocking feet. He lifted her up laughing and kissed her cherubic cheek.
Emily turned and ran to her father Stan, coming in behind with an arm full off wood.
Ellard collected the water pail he’d set down and moved it to it’s rightful place beside the barrel in the corner.
‘That field should plant up good on the morrow.’ He stated swinging Mary into her chair.
‘Not as good as last years though.’ Stan replied
Rosie stroked the hand on her knee as the man laid the wood in the box beside the fire at her feet. He looked up and smiled lovingly at her.
‘Ellard wants to put in more barley.’ Stan told her.
‘Stan wants to try the wheat but it is too cold up here for wheat it will never ripen in time.’ Ellard countered stooping to kiss Rosie’s forehead and stroke the baby’s face as he suckled.
‘I have no preference.’ She replied watching Emily stir the pot, one hand on her father’s shoulder for balance as much as for affection.
Ellard chuckled and stepped away into the back room.
‘You are contented?’ Stan asked Rosie looking up
‘Aye, I am. Have you reason for complaint?’ she replied
‘No my love I have seen you blossom and I have felt better inside myself too, and I am happy to share you to see that come about and to keep that.’
Rosie couldn’t help it. She stroked the scar on his forehead up near his hair. The days she had worried for the concussion. She had scolded Ellard for resorting to using a log of wood to try and win the stag like fight, and had sent him from them. Mary his child or no he would not dishonour her by clobbering her husband! But when Stan had recovered he had gone for days and finally returned with Ellard; the two men then the best of friends. And the three had remained as a family ever since.
‘Ellard has brought warmth and happiness to our home and I love him for it.’ she stated ‘You brought me to this home and you brought him back to us and I love you for that. We have beautiful children, each night we read and sing, each day we have good work and good food. There is no better life.’
She looked down to see the babe smile up at them. Would his baby blue eyes turn green or stay blue? Or would they be brown like her own?
