Artist's Description

Theseus was King of Athens. He was quite a hero having had numerous adventures and many women. Phaedra was not his first wife, in fact Thesus was quite old and she was in her prime. King Theseus had a grown son, Hippolyte, from a previous marriage.
They all lived in the palace at Athens together and Phaedra… fell in love with the handsome and vital Hippolyte.
She guarded her passion for as long as she could but it was too strong for her and eventually she declared her carnal love to her stepson.
Hipp. was an ascetic kind of a guy and when he realized what it was she was so hot for, he reacted with shock and extreme indignation, fleeing the palace for the beach to clear his head, gather his thoughts and regain his purity.
Phaedra knew that the game was up so she fled to her bedroom and hung herself.

Oil on Canvas.
75×50 cms.
