Artist's Description

This is one of Australia’s fleet of Collins class submarines, photographed in port in Albany, Western Australia, a few years ago. These are, apparently, the largest conventional (i.e. non-nuclear) submarines in the world. They suffered many teething problems and cost blow-outs during their development and commissioning but are now considered among the best conventional subs around.

Also in port, in the background, you can see the STS (Sail Training Ship) Leeuwin II, the largest tall ship based in Western Australia. Carol and I sailed in her some years ago. A real experience, I can tell you, although I didn’t much enjoy doing galley duty!
