Artist's Description

Mummification was performed by special mortuary priests in an outdoor workshop (Pr-Nfr) surrounded by curtains. They also participated in the funeral ceremony. You can see these priests illustrated in funerary texts, with the Sem priest (in the leopard skin) performing the important Opening of the Mouth rite on the mummy. The Sem priest could be the son of the deceased, or in the case of a royal funeral, the next king would take the role while a priest as Anubis officiates over the proceedings.

I began with the ubiquitous image of the Priest as Anubis then thought it would be good to introduce my viewers to another kind of priest as well.

The hardest part of this drawing was working out how to interpret the leopard skin in three dimensions from papyrus examples!

Date: 2011
Media: 2B pencil on Canson 220gsm
