Artist's Description

Mari Lwyd is here!
The Mysterious Mari Lwyd is a Welsh Christmas and Halloween tradition. She is a horse skull decorated with ribbons and bells, often with an articulated jaw who is carried in the form of a hobby horse from house to house by singers and attendants asking for entry, treats and general rowdiness. She was once known all over south Wales but now is rarely seen outside Glamorgan.
Cân y Fari Lwyd
Wel dyma ni’n dywad,
Gyfeillion diniwad,
I ofyn (o)s ciwan gannad,
I ofyn (o)s ciwan gannad,
I ofyn (o)s ciwan gannad
I ganu…

Well, gentle friends
Here we come
To ask may we have leave
To ask may we have leave
To ask may we have leave
To sing.
