Artist's Description

Who, or what, does the ‘Green Man’ represent? Although often associated today with Britain, this mysterious decorative motif can be found in many countries in Europe and the Middle East especially in churches. The design is even popular in Australia.

The enigmatic foliate head has no mythology, no lore, or legend to explain its significance. Is it a memento mori? Dionysus, or perhaps even the agricultural god Osiris whose face disgorges a profusion of new plant life? Or is this motif simply the mark of a master mason, displaying their craft?

I hope this design gives you pleasure, whatever the Green Man means to you.
