Artist's Description

Horus of Pe is one of a pair of anthropomorphic entities known as the Spirits or Souls of Pe and Nekhen (Buto and Hierakanopolis) These enigmatic souls were thought to embody the essence of the ancestors of Kings, even though Horus did not have a cult centre at Buto, but was worshipped in Hierakanopolis, but that city’s “soul” is a jackal! This spirit would have originally been covered in gold and inlaid with coloured glass or gemstones. Unfortunately its base has been lost so its owner is unknown. The distinctive posture of the statue represents paying homage as part of a dance or ritual the left arm of the figure was cast as a separate piece.
