Getting in touch with the Inner Geek

+1 is the new Like
I already had a few shirt designs in the pipeline, but dropping in on a post on Google+ by the delightful +Laurel Papworth discussing the very important issue of what to wear, in an upcoming interview, I offered up my own irreverent take on facebook . Links to to cool Ts followed.

Laurel then shared the slogan that she secretly desired and a design (complete with colours and font) instantly popped into my head. I offered to make her a custom shirt, since her request was doable in a short period of time and appealed to my quirky sense of humour… And I already had my template open!

It was certainly doable as text, but Laurel, understandably, wanted a really graphic look. After a quick canter through the relevant image guidelines, supplied by the lovely +Brett Gibson, I settled on the final design .

For a moment I toyed with using the exact colour of the “Like” – since it is unlikely Zuckerberg has copyrighted a colour (or am I being a bit naive here?) – but thought it too dark for the simple sleek black T I imagined.

I created the shirt, linked it and thought no more about it, seeing it as an exercise in fun and connecting with another G+ member. I had no expectation of a sale, thinking other members would most likely find her something better.

I went back to finishing off my other designs since I like the neatness of a profile displaying 3 new images in a row for ease of viewing. Uploading Laurel’s shirt was a good incentive to finish off the other 2 I had been working on.

To my utter delight, Laurel chose my design and bought it that very day!

So artists, sometimes we get lucky being in the right place at the right time. Make sure you jump in whenever an opportunity arises to have fun, make new friends and use social media to showcase your work, you never know where it might lead you!
