I am taking a water droplet refraction class and this was one of the images I submitted for the first assignment. I placed a drop of glycerin on a blade of artificial grass in front of one of my daylily cards. The process was quite difficult for me – I took over 150 shots and I was lucky to get three that were good enough for the assignment. (Good enough, but there’s plenty of room for improvement!)

It was shot indoors with a small flash attached to a flexible arm placed over the card and behind the drop. Focusing was very challenging because the viewfinder is so dark at this much magnification. Live view was somewhat helpful, but I had to use a flashlight positioned just so to get enough light to focus.

The image I submitted for the class had a plain yellow background (out of focus daylily image) so I dressed it up a bit for RedBubble in PS CS6 by taking the original red and yellow daylily and applying several rounds of Gaussian blur until I got the look I wanted. I finished it off with Fauve Rainbow from French Kiss Textures.

Nikon 300S and Nikon 105mm f/2.8 micro lens with three Kenko tubes (68mm additional extension).
