What Reading Can Do

I was watching a program on EWTN, and a guest was being interviewed. He commented on the fact that in his family, they would read good books, so that they would have something good to talk about, and it sparked some thoughts for me about some of the things that happen with our young people these days. Heck! Our YOUNG people? Perhaps many of us.…

When we were kids, reading was encouraged in our household. From first grade on, we were readers. I don’t think any of us had kindergarten back then. Instead, we played outside quite a lot, in the playhouse my dad built for us and up in our favorite tree. We played games over the fence with our neighbors and baseball and all kinds of great things. We had summer bonfires and wiener roasts, where we’d invite much of the neighborhood. My broth

Back to the Living

Good Morning! I’m finally rested some and feeling MUCH better. Sorry to anyone with whom I was gruff yesterday. I was just running out of battery power.…

Have you looked at the bestseller lists today? Sounds very interesting, some of them. Of course, all of them are in use, and I had to put a hold on the ones I wanted. But they offer alternatives, which I like very much. So I stumbled across Condoleezza Rice’s “Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom.” I’m going to see if I like it. Meanwhile, the nonfiction title on Andrew Jackson and the battle of New Orleans should also be very interesting. I’ve read a bit of the story from Our Lady of Prompt Secours (or Succor. We Cajuns use the French word, Secours because it doesn’t have other meanings.) But the story is miracul

EXHAUSTED!

Dear Friends, and others….

If you tried to get in touch with me tonight, I’m quite exhausted, didn’t sleep last night, body stressed, and my poor mind is exhausted also. Not in the right frame of mind. My sister calls people to come talk to me without talking to me. Then I don’t know who it is, and I’m careful. So please try again if you are a friend. I’m just very, very, very tired.

Later. God bless everyone.

What My Cats Say - Little Valentines

So today, I watched a short film about Chairman Mao and Tyranny. I have to say CHAIRMAN Mao, because I think mao in Chinese also means “Cat”, and cats should not be compared with Chairman Mao. When you think about it, mao actually sounds like what a cat says. At least my cats say “mao”. I’ve tried when they were young to correct them. I’d say, “MAO? That’s a Communist leader. You are not a Communist leader! You are CATS!” But they would not listen. They kept saying, “mao”. So I decided that the Chairman must have started out as…a CAT!…

Not really. But my cats really DID say “mao” when they were young. Very suspicious. I’m glad they weren’t plotting against me. I quickly taught them to say, “MOM”, and I’m much happier with that. Some of them still call me “mom” in adulthood. So

How To Work Miracles - A Valentine Message?

So in the previous entry, we learn that God loves us immensely. What a warming thought this is to us! To know that our Heavenly Father loves us so hugely. The next question is, should such a loving Father let us run hog wild and break all of His Commandments? Would you allow your child to break all of your rules all the time?…

So next it’s useful to see what Scripture has to say about it. Thus we turn to the letters of St. James. It’s in James that we find this discussion of faith and faith without works:

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,’ and yet you do not supply their bodily needs

For Those Who Are Fighting Depression or Grief

Where I live, I frequently meet people who are suffering from severe depression or anxiety, OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), and other such issues. Aside from that, there are those of us who are older and living alone or struggling to survive in one way or another. I meet people like this every day, and I can relate. I’ve often been through what they are going through, and there are ways to overcome some of these problems.…

Often, I think we are going through a new phase in life and we have not yet adjusted to the new realities, which seem at the time to be severe. Many of us try to solve the problem the same way over and over again. If it didn’t work the first and second time, why try again? Some problems cannot be solved at all, as they are actually someone else’s problem which

Saints Who Help Us

Perhaps it was back in the 80’s when I started a little exercise I have loved ever since. And I’ll tell you why. We know that the saints in heaven are not just playing harps as they sit on clouds. They are helping us from heaven so that one day we can go there too. Frankly, as nice as a harp really is, I’d get bored if that were all I had to do….. No offense to the harp.…

So one community began the exercise of making a list of saints’ names, and adding a charism, along with a prayer intention. These names and the attached info are cut into strips, folded, and put into a basket. Stir, and then pick a saint. That saint will be your helper throughout the year. it is said that the saint will also remain with you for the rest of your life. Thus, through the years, you accumulate an arm

Ode to a...Tree?

You will probably think me daft
(with no draught of that funny stuff making me laugh)
if I tell you what happened to me
as I sat still under a tree.

I sat like a stone
and time stretched out long
when I moved just to stir
I caught a soft blur.
Twas a skirt and a leg of an elf
who saw I caught part of herself
from the corner of an eye
as she faster than fast ran by.
Then lickety splickety invisibility
cloaked her specifically
from my sight.

I sat there hoping she’d reappear
but alas now she knew I was here.
the branch near me wiggled
the tree above giggled,
and a woosh of air swept her away.
