Memoirs... The Cabin...

The leaves have turned a burnt orange and the cool fall breeze blows gently across the mid-evening fields… There is a faint sound of a passing train making its way through the small village just north of him as he sits pondering his life.. Swaying back and forth on a rickety yet somewhat stable porch swing with a very slow and deliberate pace.. As he ventures of into the depths of his mind.. He has been living in a small cottage hidden from the rest of the world cutely nuzzled up against a small and rarely frequented lake for a few months now… It is a quiet and peaceful place where he has gone to put his life back together.. It has only an oversized kitchen attached to a quaint little bedroom.. There are three windows in the kitchen.. One to the south which reveals a beautiful view of the forgotten lake.. One to the west that shows just a view of a large newly built pole-barn… and finally to the north where a large field with mounds of curvy hills and a scattering of some little trees here and there.. There is a small table in the middle of the kitchen filled with lemon drops.. He doesn’t care much for them yet finds himself occasionally eating a couple… The bedroom is more of a living room than anything… it has an old couch that folds out into a bed.. Well, now more like an old bed that could be folded back into a couch… A small T.V. with only a pair of rabbit ears to connect him to the happenings of the world… and a large white rolling rack for hanging his clothes.. There is nothing fancy about the little cabin at all.. Yet it has a quality to it that seems to invite comfort.. The porch swing is located on the west side of the cabin on a small cement slab that can be reached from the kitchen door… There is no telling how old it is… but it has a fresh new layer of glossy black paint on it.. Merely a distraction from the rusted and worn chains that hang loosely from the poles.. He sits and rocks gently on it most every evening just to contemplate life and to enjoy the scenic view of nature.. He sits there this evening watching the sun slowly work its way from an aluminous orange to a fading red with a pink and grey blanket wrapping softly around it.. As if to tuck the sun in for the night.. He is wondering to himself.. How did I get here… As he suddenly hears something about thirty yards to the southwest of him… He looks over to see a beautiful doe with two little ones at her side.. They are eating apples that are laying next to a tall old oak tree… The apples had been placed there simply for this reason… They are so close he can count the spots on the two little ones with her.. He continues to slowly rock back and forth just watching the little family.. Amazed that they don’t seem to care that he is present.. The mother looks up at him occasionally as if to say.. I know you’re there, and I am fine with that… Her babies pay him no attention what so ever.. He enjoys their company for it does tend to get pretty lonely out there at times.. Even if only for a passing moment.. As they quickly make their way off to explore the night after having a little snack.. His company gone… and with the moon sneaking in above him.. He looks off to the south and stairs at the small black area that just a short time before was an active body of water… With its waves dancing joyously across its surface.. And some visitors of the flying nature stopping by for a swim and maybe a little dinner.. The moon leaves a swaying white streak across the middle of it… as if it were listening to the crickets and tiny little frogs serenade it… Even when you are lost and contemplating the unfortunate happenings in your life… Nature can stop you… Just to remind us how beautiful life can be……
