Artist's Description

We live in York but my mother is part of the Battle of Stamford Bridge Tapestry Project, so I have to drive her over there fairly regularly. Since it was a nice day, I decided to take some photos around the village while I waited for her to finish. The Viking-inspired planter by the bridge over the Derwent was built by students from York College, and is named & styled after the ship of King Harald Hardrada of Norway (1015-1066). Harald, and most of his Viking army, was killed at Stamford Bridge by the Saxons under the command of King Harold Godwinson. They then had to rush down to Hastings to be defeated by William the Conqueror.
