Tree House

The sun rose in the West this morning
A brand new backwards day
Different day, same shirt
Sweat stains and tomato ketchup
The smells of a struggling artist
Struggling one room apartment

Extended yawns and arms outstretched
Getting ready after a shower
And not a long shower but I couldn’t remain in the same place for long
Ready to move on to the next task
Try to read for an hour
Because James Franco said so

Wires hanging down
Roaches running across the ceiling
And they never bothered me or you
Trading card box full of weed
And pumpkin seeds

Sketched Kindergarten pictures on the walls
We climbed onto the roof
And pulled out the flask
Toasted to the best days
Then watched a movie in the hall
Let it replay and replay and replay

Those beats from the basement
All night, pounding in my ears
Could make me smile for days
After crying for years
And you, or you, or you
Can’t say very much about it
I doubt that I’m wrong
So I chime in with my harmonica
It’s untuned, and I didn’t know it could be
So we close our ears and open our minds
And pretend it sounds great

Because without you, I would be down
And without me, you would be sky high
The tree house floor is a bit unstable
We might just fly away
I hope you think that’s just fine
We’ll probably come back down in no time
My friends are all as sneaky as I am
And I deserve nothing more
Than to hold pinkies with thieves
That make lying feel alright
