Autumn Branch

The blue-gray plumage against those faded autumn leaves gave me exactly the sort of gentle color contrast I love working with. I painted the bird more carefully than its surroundings, then used loose amber, ochre, and muted green shapes for the leaves so the branch would feel airy rather than crowded. A pale blue wash behind everything provides just enough sky without turning the background into a separate subject.
