I choose Jupiter to be the Jack of Stars because it is the largest planet in our solar system and its name conveniently starts with J. Also I spent quite a bit of time playing marbles as a child and Jupiter looks like a shooter, which we called a boulder. The game of marbles in turn made me think of other childhood games such as jacks – and Jupiter has so many moons that I thought of Jupiter as a boulder glistening among smaller marbles (Jupiter’s larger moons) and jacks (the still-being-counted smaller moons).
THE LAYERS
Layer One – The background layer is a sketch of Jupiter with its three closest moons – Io, Europa, and Ganymede.
Layer Two – The next layer was based on the Attic Red Figure portrait of Zeus with his eagle and spear from 470-460 B.C. which is in the Louvre.
Layer Three – Then came the Jack of Diamonds playing card. I noticed that when I overlaid the card image that Jupiter's spear landed in the eye of the Jack. I left it that way because it seemed to fit with Jupiter’s character and the nature of conflict. In other words, when aiming at another you often end up with a stick in your own eye.
Layer Four – In this layer I added the Js in the opposing corners and sixty jacks. With the three larger moons already portrayed, this adds up to 63 moons, which I believe is the current count.
Layer Five – Finally I added the swan spreading its wings in reference to the famous union of Leda and the Swan, the birth of Helen of Troy, and the resulting disaster.
