The Sickle of Leo is an asterism (a prominent pattern of stars), which is part of the Leo constellation and consists of six stars. So this was the perfect starting point for the Six of Stars since my husband was both a Leo (born in August) and had sickle cell disease and the painting was created in August as well. Furthermore, the lion is great symbol for a warrior.
Layer One – The first layer was inspired by Lion figure on ancient Phrygian pottery on exhibition at Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilization – modern day Turkey and from the era of King Midas.
Layer Two – The second layer is inspired by actual photos of sickled blood. This same image forms the background of the King of Hearts painting. However, it is more prominent in this painting.
Layer Three – Then comes a layer of inspired by the beautiful and haunting reliefs of an Assyrian lion hunt found in a former palace in Nineveh dating from about 645 BC now in British Museum.
Layer Four – This layer is based on the beautiful Leo Star map from the Celestial Atlas by Alexander Jamieson, published in 1822 with the 6s added in the opposing corners.
Combined I ended up with a victorious looking Lion prancing through his pain and the stars -- a new favorite of mine.
