Foundations
Titled "Foundations," this artwork aims to provoke contemplation about our relationship with nature in Nova Scotia. Drawing inspiration from the hues prevalent at Melmerby Beach—the varying blues of the ocean, the intricate wood grains, and the soft sandy shore—I sought to embrace the often overlooked beauty of the natural world while also delving into our evolving connection with a shifting climate.
During the creation of this piece, I found myself pondering the impactful words of climate activist Greta Thunberg during her address to the EU in 2019: "Our civilization is so fragile, it is almost like a castle built in the sand." These words led me to the shoreline, where the interplay of sea and land evokes a sense of impermanence. Our intricate bond with nature forms the bedrock of our identity, urging us to safeguard this bond for both present and future generations.
