Eight of Infinite Hearts

The horizontal eight looks like the infinity sign and was the starting idea for this painting. Layer One – The background layer contains image of a tumbler or gymnast who forms a continuous circle with his body and is the father of the family in the painting. Layer Two – The second layer is a reworking on the Geb and Nut scenes which are common on ancient Egyptian coffins. I have always been fascinated how the Egyptian genders for sky and earth are the reverse of the European ones, with the Goddess Nut as “Mother Sky” and God Geb as “Father Earth.” In this painting the mother, in the form of the Goddess Nut, is protecting her family as she forms an arc over them. Two figures of Isis, the goddess of mother and children, are in the corners and represent the Grandmothers keeping a watchful eye from outside the inner family circle. Layer Three – Layer three brings in the crocodile that the sons are riding through life. The traditional Geb figure has been changed into the younger son and he is holding onto the tail of the crocodile while anchoring the older brother who has his head and heads reaching up to the sky. Meanwhile, the tumbling father has his watchful eye on the head of the snake that is slithering in from the right of the painting and the arching sky mother is poised to grab the snake’s tail. Layer Four – In this layer eight swords point from the edge of the painting into the center where they meet and revolve creating the spokes of the great wheel of life. Layer Five – The Eight of Hearts layer is the top layer and the eight central hearts are on riding on top of the wheel of swords.
