A vintage poster from the 1900s Olympic Games in Paris. The second modern Olympic Games was actually a rather loose collection of international competitions recognized by the Olympic committee and held in conjunction with the 1900 World Exposition in Paris. Posters were created for athletics, rowing, cycling, gymnastics and, here, fencing. We see a woman fencer flourishing the three traditional weapons: foil, épée, and saber. In fact, women were not to enter the fencing events until 1924—but try telling that to Pal, who aimed comely female figures at his viewers’ hearts as unerringly as if they wore the target seen on this costume.
