Our perception of our senses does not arise simply from our brains reading out information from our sensory organs (e.g., eyes, skin, ears, etc.). Instead, our brains ‘construct’ the reality we perceive around us, typically by combining current sensory information with prior knowledge and experiences to form our perceptions of the world. Visual illusions demonstrate how that construction of perception happens. Illusions thus basically trick our brains into seeing something that is different from the actual information contained in the image.
