For description and technical info, please scroll down. * *Description Description (Source: Wikipedia ) The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is a North American mammal of the cat family Felidae. With twelve recognized subspecies, it ranges from southern Canada to northern Mexico, including most of the continental United States. The bobcat is an adaptable predator that inhabits wooded areas, as well as semi-desert, urban edge, forest edges, and swampland environments. It persists in much of its original range and populations are healthy. Though the bobcat prefers rabbits and hares, it will hunt anything from insects and small rodents to deer. Prey selection depends on location and habitat, season, and abundance. Like most cats, the bobcat is territorial and largely solitary, although there is some overlap in home ranges. It uses several methods to mark its territorial boundaries, including claw marks and deposits of urine or faeces. The bobcat breeds from winter into spring and has a gestation period of about two months. The elusive predator features in Native American mythology and the folklore of European settlers. Endangered Although bobcats have been hunted extensively by humans, both for sport and fur, their population has proven resilient. The Bobcat is on the IUCN list of threatened species - Status: Least Concern Technical details Photograph made with Pentax K10D camera and Tamron AF70-300mm Tele-macro1:2 lens Exposure 1/180 sec, f. 5.6 mm focal length 220 mm , ISO 200 Date: July 10, 2011 TAGS:netherlands, burgers_dierenpark_arnhem, zoo, nature, animals, wildlife, bobcat, big_cats, eyes, brown, close_up, steppeland * *Features and Top10 placements Features and Top10 placements Featured in Extreme Close-ups (Oct. 16, 2011) Thank you so much to the hosts of these marvellous groups and challenges * *See more See more See more of my Big Cats See more of my zoo_photography You can now also search my portfolio using Steppeland Thematic Catalogue * h3.
