Soursob in the Garden
Originally from South Africa Soursobs are a weed widespread throughout all states of Australia. In Australia, it invades coastal heath vegetation, grassland, woodland and dry forest. The first record of Soursob occurring in Australia was in 1841 in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, where it was grown as an ornamental plant. It was recognized as a potential weed in the 1850s and by 1879 it was known as a serious weed of gardens and wheat fields in parts of South Australia.
Soursobs appear in Autumn and Winter. The problem with Soursobs is that they are have a fast-growing system of onion like bulbs growing beneath the surface. They have small secondary bulbs known as bulbils. These bulbils are attached to the root system and each Soursob can have as many as 20 bulbils! When you remove the plant, the bulbils are left behind that then detach and grow into a new plant and the cycle continues.
