Poppies and Cornflowers: White Background
I was inspired to create this mandala while walking through a neighborhood park that was home to masses of brilliant poppies and wildflowers. I wanted to capture my feeling of joy and celebrate nature in this mandala. I used a batik process that alternates using watercolor techniques for painting dyes on stretched China silk and using a wax pen to preserve colors, create details and prevent subsequent dyes from affecting them: dye, wax, repeat until the design was complete and wax covered the entire composition. I ironed the wax out between sheets of tissue paper and newsprint. The edges were trimmed to follow the design's contours, Then gold leaf was applied.
