Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Phantom Falls is a popular walk within the Otway National Park. From Lorne it is only a 10 minute drive to Allenvale Mill Picnic Grounds. Follow the St George River slipping around the edge of a quaint little private farm (complete with chickens and orchard), before heading steeply uphill for a couple of kilometres. Arriving at the falls two things will likely be quite obvious. The first of which is that the place is heavily frequented, so if you want an image without people your best bet is to arrive early in the morning. The second thing you will find is that the water levels are quite variable. In summer there is much less water, exposing a lot of rocks that can look distracting when dry. Conversely in winter the water levels are so dramatically high that even approaching the falls means being totally saturated. For this reason it took me several attempts across a few years to find the right balance before capturing this image. Even then, I had to wait a couple of hours for some clouds to soften the light, and people to exit the scene. Ultimately I am very happy with the way the photograph turned out. Shot on medium format and focus stacked there is plenty of detail for huge prints.
