Idola Saint-Jean Feminist in tabarnak
Idola Saint-Jean (1880-1945) was a feminist activist and the first Quebec woman to run in a federal election. For more than twenty years, she actively campaigned for the improvement of women's legal rights. In 1927, she founded the Canadian Alliance for Women's Suffrage in Quebec, which aimed primarily at working-class women. Through speeches, recommendations, memoirs, letters, conferences and demonstrations, she defends her ideas of social justice. In 1929, she wrote a bilingual column for the Montreal Herald and, in 1933, she launched La Sphère feminine. For Idola Saint-Jean, “the feminist movement is a global trend that no one, that no force can stop”.
