Hummingbird watercolour splash art
This original hummingbird artwork was made with ink liners and watercolour paint. The detail in the line work mirrors the technical wonder of living things, while the splashes of colour represent the joy and messiness that comes with the freedom of being. -- When given the option of choosing a different background colour (such as on apparel) I strongly recommend that you stick with a white background. -- Hummingbirds have a kind of magic to them which has always fascinated me. I had an unforgettable experience as a young child playing in the garden: I noticed a sunbird (our South African counterpart to the hummingbird) - it was flitting daintily and with lightening quick intensity in a blur of colourful shimmering feathers, from one shrub to another, pausing in midair to drink nectar from the flowers with its long thin beak. I wanted to get a closer look so I decided to hide and wait in between the bushes. I was crouching there for what felt like ages, but eventually, and within arm's reach, the tiny iridescent bird came and hovered right in front of my face. I stayed there for a while - perhaps a bit confused or curious about this strange creature between the flowers. I was captivated in that moment: wanting to savour every part of it - holding my breath and resisting the urge to reach out and touch it. And then it was over... the bird flew off and my heart soared with it. -- Moments like that - of connecting with nature and rejoicing in the beauty of creation - are worth celebrating and memorialising through artistic expression, which allows me share a part of this magical experience with you.
