What a music! I will remember it forever... Beautiful lady in folk costume playing the fascinating Hardanger fiddle in Norsk Folkemuseum (The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History). Hardingfele, or Hardanger fiddle, is a traditional Norwegian stringed instrument. It is very similar to the violin but except of usual four strings played it has other four or five resonating understrings, giving the instrument very pleasant echo-like sound. Hardanger fiddles are often highly decorated, with mother-of-pearl inlays, black ink decorations, and animals carved on the scroll. Techniques of playing differ between regions, as well as tunings: there are more than 20 different tunings recorded in Norway! Most players learn by ear and they are often not able to read notes.
