Coralflowers Watercolor Painting
The first in a brand new series of pieces I am currently painting based on the flora of Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach, CA.
I take early morning walks in the area and came across a fallen coral tree on one of these walks. This allowed me to get up close and take a good look at the flowers. Standing in the middle of the collapsed tree, I was captivated by the snakelike coiling and twisting of the branches, the brilliant bright red blooms with their splashes of orange, the conical shape of the buds transitioning into flowers and their long purple stamens. I collected a few flowers to take home and paint. I initially painted them upside down before realizing that they hang the other way and inverting the artwork. This unintended consequence of the flowers needing water contributed greatly to the dynamic composition and overall feel of the artwork.
