to wit, the chevalier de saint-georges, a mixed-race french caribbean violinist, composer, conductor, champion fencer, and leader of europe’s first all-black military regiment, and the chevalier d’eon, an androgynous graduate in civil and religious law, author, diplomat, and spy, who lived the first half of their life as a man and the second as a woman.
the match took place at the london home of the prince regent, and the piece is after a painting by the abbé alexandre-auguste robineau. robineau himself was a violinist, composer, conductor, and artist; he did several portraits of saint-georges.
