Autumn in Japan: The Golden Shrine
This is the 26th image from my "Autumn in Japan" series. I've wanted to visit Asia since I was a teenager, and in October of 2010, my wish finally came true. I spent about 10 days in Japan. My fascination with Asian culture and traditions finally became a reality to me, and the photographer in me went into overdrive. In 10 days, I captured 2,500+ pictures. I hope you enjoy my first (but hopefully not my last) perspective of this beautiful & amazing country. I found the Shitaya Shrine in Ueno, Tokyo tucked away in between throngs and throngs of buildings. I was there around lunch time, and so it seemed people were stopping by during their work breaks for a quick wish or prayer at the shrine. According to tradition, the Shitaya Shrine was originally built on the Ueno plateau in 730, and moved to the east foot in 1627 because of construction for the Kaneiji Temple. However, since the land was small, it moved near its present location in 1680. The Shitaya Shrine was the guardian god of Shitaya area and was believed in widely. A part of this area therefore was named "Inari-chō" for "Shitaya Inari" which is the former name of this shrine in Edo period. The name was changed to "the Shitaya Shrine" in 1872 and it moved to its present location for rezoning in 1928. A great Japanese-style painter Yokoyama Taikan who lived in Ikenohata drew pictures of clouds and dragons on the ceiling of the new main hall. Shot with a Nikon D90 in October 2010. Selective-coloring processed in PSE 8. © jdub photography 2010
