Bush Lessons
This painting reflects a story of a child learning bush knowledge from his Grandfather. His Grandfather showed him how dangerous a Hoppy Joe (Giant Bull Ant) could be and how they can jump onto you from a far distance. This painting reflects that lesson being learned as the young child wondered too close to the Ant hole. Seeing the danger, the Grandfather intervened and was bitten. With several bites his leg swelled to twice its size - thus showing his Grandson the importance of listening and respecting the dangers of the bush.
The Grandson after seeing his Grandfather in sevre pain for several days, vowed to listen to his Grandfather more carefully in the future.
A bite and sting from one of these Hoppy Joes can easily pierce the skin and put a man in hospital in a serious condition. Older Aboriginal people would often put chewed Tabacco on the bite to relieve pain and the pincers were also used to keep a wound together (just as stitches are used today).
This painting is dedicated to my Grandfather - who taught me many lessons!
