The Amethyst Sunbird ( Chalcomitra amethystina, family: Nectariniidae) is one of the seven sunbirds that have recently been moved into the genus Chalcomitra from the genus Nectarinia. It is also known as the African Black Sunbird. Chalcomitra amethystina is found from Sub-Saharan Africa: Congo, DRC, Tanzania, Kenya and Somalia in the north to the Cape Province in South Africa. It appears black from a distance, but at close ranges it has a greenish tinge to it with purple on its face. As with most species of birds, the female Amathyst Sunbird appears to be a lot less beautiful than its male companion.
It is a common resident. Males appear pure black; females identified by creamy underparts and dusky throat with pale yellow moustachial-streak. The call, often given in flight, is “tschiek” or “zit”; also makes a stuttering “chichichichi” and a pleasant subdued warbling song uttered for long periods while concealed in foliage. Pairs and single birds occur in woodland, forest and riverine forest fringes, less often in bushveld, frequently in suburbia.
The Amethyst Sunbird is mainly seen singly or in pairs in the wild. It is a monogamous bird which means that the bird finds and breeds with one partner for the rest of its life. The bird lays between 1 to 3 eggs and they are coloured grey. The nest is built high up in the tree canopy and is protected from predators by branches and the dense green foligae. It feeds on nectar, juices of fruits, insects and spiders.
