Pitts "Coke Machine" In Action
The 2010 Montoursville Rotary Hot Air Balloon Festival kicked of today with some very exciting aerobatic biplane flying maneuvers. This is the Pitts Special S-2B (I'm pretty sure of the model, but please correct me if I'm wrong). It's called the "Coke Machine", for fairly obvious reasons. Interestingly, to me at least, is the fact that this aircraft is powered by a Lycoming high performance airplane engine, which was built in Williamsport, PA...just a short distance from this event, in Lycoming County. In the full size version of this image, you can easily recognize the pilot's face in the cockpit. This Balloon Festival had been canceled two years in a row, so I was itchin' to get back to shooting some flying machines, after three years of waiting for the chance. I caught a bug and wasn't feeling very well, but, even with a fever, I wasn't going to miss this long awaited event for anything! The Rotary Club moved the event to the Lycoming County Fairgrounds in Hughesville, Pennsylvania this year. It had always been held at the Williamsport Municipal Airport in the past. This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D using a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L zoom lens. The focal length was 350mm. The shutter speed was 1/2000th sec. at f/5.6. The camera’s ISO was set to 100.
