Yellow Dot Shell
This series was done with a limited warm palette of orange, khaki and of course, yellow. Black and white here and there, help anchor or highlight the colours. In many of the pieces, I added a dash of sky blue to add some cool zing to the sunny colours. I added wrapping paper from Rococo chocolates, literally 19th century designs printed on tissue paper. The chocolates weren't mine to enjoy, unfortunately. But I was handed the papers in the belief I'd do something arty with them - a correct assumption! My aim was to offset the strong free gestures of the brush strokes with the graphic rigour of the designs on the tissue paper. The beauty of working with tissue paper is that it virtually becomes transparent, leaving the printed designs to show over any paint marks below.
