Towards the Light, Mt Stirling, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography At 1749 metres Mt Stirling offers fantastic views and a great alpine experience. Devoid of ski resorts and lifts, it lacks the crowding and commercial feel, but still has groomed ski trails, and well documented walking tracks, many taking you passed a small collection of historic mountain huts. Only a short drive from Mansfield, the Mt Stirling experience generally starts from Telephone Box Junction. From there a hike to the summit including two or three huts such as King Spur Hut, GGS Hut and Bluff Spur Hut, is around 12km, or closer to 14km if you include Razorback Hut as well. It is quite steep so you'll need to plan for being on the mountain most of the day. Most of my images are the work of planning and many return trips, sometimes over decades. However, this photograph was the result of a rare and quite unexpected moment. Our boy and I were hiking the Mt Stirling trails very early in the morning, looking for a particular mountain hut I wanted to investigate for its photographic potential. The going was fairly tough through the snow, so we had our heads down focussed on a steep incline. Topping the rise we were suddenly greeted with the most amazing light streaming through the trees. Great shafts of sunlight pierced the fog as it drifted across the scene, shifting constantly. Fortunately I had just enough time find and capture a composition before the fog rose. We were both quite excited with our images, and the day had only just begun. What a great experience to have shared.
