In Tigers Glade, 'midst rosèd bow'rs,
Where thistles wane and hazels tow'r,
A golden beast, to mortal eyes,
Dwells there beneath the sapphire skies.
Lo, radiant flames that bind the earth,
Bear witness to that creature's birth;
As lightning's flash and thunder's roar
Proclaim his reign forevermore.
O Tiger, crowned in divine light,
Did He who made the Rose tinge the night?
Or dare the bound'ries of your might
Make flowers weep, till dawn ignites?
A bed of roses, painted red,
As if those petals bled and bled;
Whence fell the crimson shade of hue?
From Tiger's fire, or sapphire blue?
What forge or anvil formed thine eyes,
That make the roses weep and sigh?
What grasp of hand, celestial flair,
Gave grace to thy sinewed lair?
When Tiger glimpsed those gentle flow'rs,
And sun betrays the twilight hours,
Did He who shaped the Rose's form,
Conceive the majesty of storm?
O Tiger, thou beast of radiant light,
Stars tremble in their fiery flight;
In Tiger's Glade, at hour of gloaming,
Roses weep, forever blooming.
Let mortals mock and angels sing,
For truths both frightful and inspiring;
