View Larger on Chockstone Photography On a calm afternoon I, and many others, sat watching this storm approaching. The hues were coloured by local bushfires, making an interesting cloudscape. Beach goers were enjoying the water. All was good in the world. Then, seconds after I took this shot the mother of all storms blasted us. First came an insane wind that whipped the sand into frenzy, pelting us with millions of tiny granules that stung like the nothing else. Children screamed, adults lay curled into a foetal position crying, others tried to run for the safety of their cars but were unable to see them though the maelstrom. Then the rain hit. A hard, driving rain, hammering us with its ferocity. The whole thing was over in minutes and before long some of the youngsters were laughing about it, but for a while there it was one of the most intense experiences of my life. Fortunately I’d just finishing packing my camera bag so my gear was okay, though I did have sand in my hair for many days afterwards.
